Can Centipedes be Dangerous to Humans or Animals?

house centipede bite

Additionally, keeping your outdoor spaces free from debris and clutter goes a long way in dissuading house centipedes from seeking refuge near your home. In my experience, bites from these creatures are exceedingly rare. House centipedes are naturally timid and, thanks to their small jaws, have difficulty penetrating human skin. On the rare occasion when a bite does occur, it typically results in nothing more than a small, red bump, with no significant pain or itching.

How To Get Rid of a House Centipede Infestation

When a centipede feels threatened, it will pierce the skin of its prey with the pincer-like tips of the legs closest to the head, which are called forcipules. If you find centipedes in your house, there’s a good chance there are other pests around, such as cockroaches, spiders, and ants, that they hunt for and feed on. Complications from centipede bites may result from infection or from damage to the skin and tissue where the bite occurred.

What happens if a centipede bites you?

They may sneak up on the bug from behind so that the target has fewer opportunities to fight back. That said, the vast majority of people will not experience anything more than some mild discomfort and slight swelling. Human centipedes are capable of completing their entire life cycle indoors, but they can only do that if they have food to hunt and eat! Bug-free homes aren’t going to attract centipedes over the long run. Remove leaves and weeds and seal cracks to prevent any seepage of moisture into your home.

Fortunately, there are practical measures you can take to minimize the chances of encountering these creatures in your home and getting bitten. House centipedes, despite their intimidating appearance, are generally harmless to humans and do not bite unless they feel threatened or provoked. Because house centipedes prefer warm and wet environments, they’re frequently found in the Southern states. However, you’ll also find them in Northern basements, taking shelter from the cold outside.

house centipede bite

One question that often arises when discussing house centipedes is whether they bite humans or pets. Hi Gabriel,Your very detailed photos are a wonderful addition to our website. We are very happy to learn that you were able to self identify this House Centipede. Keep in mind that house centipede bites are uncommon and only occur when the centipede feels threatened. They are generally not considered a danger to humans and mostly help keep other pest populations in check.

Pest Control

Outdoors, house centipedes prefer to live in cool, damp places. Centipede respiratory systems do not provide any mechanism for shutting the spiracles, and that is why they need an environment that protects them from dehydration and excessive cold. Most live outside, primarily under large rocks, piles of wood or leaves, in barkdust and especially in compost piles. They often emerge from hiding during the watering of gardens or flowerbeds. These centipedes can be found in almost any part of the house, although they are usually encountered in dark or dimly lit areas such as basements and garages. Inside the home, they can be found in bathrooms and lavatories, which tend to be humid, but they can also be found in drier places like offices, bedrooms and dining rooms.

Centipedes inject venom into their prey to protect and defend themselves. House centipedes are not dangerous to humans and can actually be beneficial by helping to control other household pests. Understanding their behavior and taking preventative measures can minimize their presence in your living spaces. Discovering a population of centipedes in your home could indicate other insects sharing your home.

What Eats Centipedes and Millipedes?

This critter is a common household pest, seeking out a moist environment and solid food source in the comforts of your home. While not overly dangerous to people, a centipede might not be a welcomed guest. Centipedes rarely bite humans, but when they do, it is usually because they feel threatened.

It is noteworthy that gardeners are often the victims of centipede bites, highlighting the importance of taking precautionary measures while working in gardens. When bitten by a house centipede, individuals may experience a range of symptoms. The most common symptoms include severe pain, swelling, and redness at the site of the bite. These symptoms typically subside within a few hours and are considered harmless in most cases.

Treat stings and pinches as you would a bee sting or mosquito bite, with anti-itch and pain-relieving medication. They’ve even been known to make meals of birds, mice, bats and snakes. An ice cube wrapped in plastic and a thin cloth and placed on a centipede bite usually relieves the pain. Centipedes are nocturnal, leaving their daytime cover to find food. They will enter a house through cracks or openings in the foundation, so checking your home for unwanted entrances is crucial to establishing a pest-free home.

They have yellowish-gray or dark brown bodies, which helps them blend in with their surroundings. Remember, attempting to deal with centipede infestations on your own can be challenging and may not yield satisfactory results. By consulting a pest control expert, you can ensure that the infestation is properly addressed, giving you peace of mind and a centipede-free living environment.

In this guide, I’ll help you identify these pests and discuss a range of natural and chemical solutions to defeat them. In most cases, it can be treated with basic first aid and does not require professional medical attention. House centipedes are typically yellowish-gray with elongated, flattened bodies and numerous legs. They are often found in homes, especially in damp areas like basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces. While they can be startling due to their appearance and rapid movements, they are not venomous or harmful to humans.

Winging It: Helmet History Reconsidered

michigan football helmet design

The College Football Playoff trophy — adorned with a dazzling white, marquise stone — symbolizes the team’s January 2024 championship win, while the words “NATIONAL CHAMPIONS” garner considerable attention. Fifteen round white stones line the top side of the ring to honor the team’s undefeated (15-0) season, and 12 brilliant baguette stones — representing the program’s 12 National Championship titles — line each side of the ring top. The University of Michigan helmet consisted of a blue leather helmet with a maize colored wing and three stripes running from front to back. A play on the current iconic design, here's an anodized version of Michigan's maize and blue lids with a gold and midnight navy twist.

Winged football helmet

In addition to the enhanced visual appeal of the design, Crisler also believed that the wing design assisted the quarterbacks in being able to see the wide receivers downfield. The Wolverines are the only major program to top 900 victories all time. Add 42 Big Ten championships and 11 national championships and you have a winning pedigree that all but a handful of programs surely must envy.

Georgetown University

Many of you smartypants types also know that credit for originating the winged concept is usually given to Princeton coach Fritz Crisler, who came up with the design in 1935 and then took it with him to Michigan in 1938. The Michigan helmet design also plays a role in recruiting new talent. High school athletes who dream of playing college football often consider not the team’s performance. The ring top is flooded with shimmering white stones and features the university’s iconic block “M” logo, which is expertly crafted out of a custom-cut, deep blue stone.

Our Latest College Football Stories

In about ten years the colors came to be styled, as they are now styled, yellow and blue. The original blue was neither light nor very dark, and the yellow was decidedly golden. Never has there been any warrant for the sickly yellow and the faded blue furnished by some of the tradesmen of Detroit and Ann Arbor. The leather helmet eventually gave way to synthetic materials, single face bars were added that have since grown into elaborate cages, the simple slide chin strap was replaced with precisely fitted, double snap straps. Advances in design and engineering, some based on research done at Michigan, have greatly increased the protective capabilities of the modern helmet. Through all the changes Michigan has preserved the design Crisler imported from Princeton to "dress up" and add a bit of style to Michigan's look.

Winging It: Helmet History Reconsidered

Below is a link to a story from the Daily Princetonian about the history of the helmet. Crisler's first team went on to compile a record and tie for secondin the conference. The maize got a touch brighter, and the blue part of the helmet had a blue matte finish to it. While it may be hard to see, Michigan added some yellow flakes inside of the maize part of the helmet. The Wolverines also took away the numbers from the side of the helmet. Along with the white facemasks, the Browns are bringing back the gloss finish to the helmet as well.

Michigan's Winged Helmet

When a bike helmet breaks, it’s absorbing what’s called “impulse”—a secondary effect of an initial force. Impulse, which gives objects momentum, is what transmits kinetic energy through a system. It takes into account not just force, but also how long that force was applied. To calculate impulse, you multiply the average force by the length of time it was exerted on the subject.

Latest Wolverine News

The fact that the design has enjoyed such long and consistent usage, along with the success of the football team, is what transformed it from a simple adornment to an iconic representation of the school and its tradition. Take in a game among the more than 109,000 strong at Michigan Stadium, which will be packed again Saturday afternoon when Nebraska visits for a key Big Ten game, and soak in the atmosphere created by college football's largest stadium. A rendition of "The Victors" when Big Blue takes the field is one of the game's most chillbump-inspiring fight songs. The leather helmet eventually gave way to synthetic materials, singleface bars were added that have since grown into elaborate cages, the simple slide chin strap was replaced with precisely fitted, double snap straps.

Lots of reactions to Michigan football being honored at 2024 NFL draft

Michigan State football debuts new helmet with classic uniform combo vs. Wolverines - Sports Illustrated

Michigan State football debuts new helmet with classic uniform combo vs. Wolverines.

Bringing back the white facemasks for the first time since 2006, the Browns continue to return to tradition following their tumultuous uniform botch in 2014. The Wolverines vehemently denied the allegations, but former head coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the final three games of the regular season by the Big Ten for violating the conference's sportsmanship policy. Michigan initially filed a temporary restraining order fighting the suspension, but ended up dropping the case the day before it went to court. After Michigan won the national title, NCAA president Charlie Baker said Michigan's victory was "fair and square." The proposed change would add player-to-coach helmet communications to college football, eliminating the use of relaying signs from the sidelines to the huddle using signs.

Sports like football present big challenges for the designers of protective head gear. To dissipate energy, a helmet typically has to deform, like the bike version cracks in a collision. And disposable helmets aren’t practical for football players.

michigan football helmet design

So, the Michigan football helmet design means a lot more than a cool look; it’s a powerful symbol of their football greatness. Michigan football helmets have a winged design on the sides, but there’s no “Ted” on them. The winged design is a symbol of the team’s tradition and history, but it doesn’t stand for “Ted.” Read about how to attach mouthguard to football helmet.

Michigan football has a rich history, and the helmet design is closely tied to that history. Wearing the winged helmet is a source of pride for players, symbolizing their connection. Michigan’s football helmet design is iconic, featuring a simple yet powerful design.

Our favorite alternate Michigan helmet from IU_Customs, this three-color, chrome fade is sleek, but there's one question we have — with what jersey and pants combination could you pair it? The Wolverines would almost be forced to come up with gray alternate apparel to compliment the helmet or go with the blue and maize home option. "Funny thing was," Roberts adds, "we had all gotten buzz cuts that week for team unity before the playoffs. And now we all had to readjust our helmets to fit our smaller heads, which meant the yellow stripes were all out of whack." Company, the nation's largest supplier of football equipment, first advertised its model FH5 helmet in the 1937 Official Intercollegiate Football Guide. It is this kind of institutional arrogance that turns people off to us.

The NFL has been using helmet communications since 1994 for offensive players and since 2008 on both sides of the ball. Players who have the radio in their helmet on the NFL level are distinguished with a green dot on their helmet. Bit by bit, college football is inching closer to mirroring its professional counterpart in operation and structure, and the latest change is coming in the wake of Michigan football's drama during the 2023 season. The right side of the ring highlights a university slogan — “MICHIGAN VS. EVERYBODY” — and showcases the team’s official 2023 National Championship logo.
